Raymond Blanc calls on the nation to GO Organic

Raymond Blanc calls on the nation to GO Organic

Posted by Ina Woolcott

World–renowned chef and restaurateur Raymond Blanc has joined forces with Garden Organic, the UK’s leading organic growing charity, to launch ‘Go Organic’ – an initiative designed to encourage more people to grow, cook and eat organic food, while at the same time supporting the work of Garden Organic’s Heritage Seed Library (HSL) in its battle to conserve rare vegetable varieties under threat of extinction.

People can Go Organic by hosting a sponsored dinner or lunch for friends and family where the menu is made up, in part, of organic ingredients. The guests will then be encouraged to make a donation that will be passed on to Garden Organic to fund the work of its Heritage Seed Library, a unique collection which aims to protect traditional varieties of vegetables that are disappearing rapidly. To date, Garden Organic’s Heritage Seed Library has saved 800 varieties of vegetable from the verge of extinction but more needs to be done to conserve threatened varieties from around the world. Earlier this year, experts from Garden Organic highlighted that 98 per cent of vegetable varieties have vanished over the last 100 years. They fear that if something isn’t done to stop this trend, then more varieties will disappear, threatening food security.

Anyone interested in taking part can register online at:
www.gardenorganic.org.uk/goorganic or call 02476 303517. The registration pack contains everything needed to set up a Go Organic meal, with invitations, sponsorship forms, posters and special recipes and growing advice from Garden Organic and Raymond Blanc.

Blueberries are Powerful Antioxidant

Blueberries are Powerful Antioxidant

Posted by Ina Woolcott

My daughter Aiyana and I love blueberries. Aiyana will eat a whole organic carton as a snack at least twice a week when they are in season. They are often on offer at Sainsburys or Tescos, and when we go shopping there I will often give her a carton to eat whilst she is sitting in the trolley. My mum just sent me an article about the countless health benefits of blueberries which I would like to share with you. Below are a few excerpts followed by the link. Happy reading!

‘Packed with antioxidant phytonutrients called anthocyanidins, blueberries neutralise free radical damage to the collagen matrix of cells and tissues that can lead to cataracts, glaucoma, varicose veins, haemorrhoids, peptic ulcers, heart disease and cancer. Anthocyanins, the blue-red pigments found in blueberries, improve the integrity of support structures in the veins and entire vascular system’.

They also offer cardio-protective action, promote gastrointestinal health, improve night-time vision, protect against macular degeneration, may reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, protect against colon and ovarian cancer and also can help relieve both diarrhoea and constipation.
